Do you know 3 times when Liquid Plumber might damage your toilet?
Read on so you’re not one of the people who accidentally cause costly damage to their toilet.
1. Don’t use Liquid Plumber when something has fallen into the toilet and is causing a blockage.
Many times the reason a toilet becomes blocked is because of a foreign object such as a toothbrush or a child’s toy that has been dropped. Liquid plumber won’t remove a blockage like this, but it will create a chemical reaction making the removal of the blockage more hazardous.
In Birmingham, AL we see this all the time. Especially in suburbs like Homewood and Vestavia Hills which are a popular choice for families with young children.
Children are often the culprits when it comes to finding out the source of a blockage. This is because they have often dropped a toy (or sometimes even the car keys) in the toilet as part of a game.
2. Don’t use Liquid Plumber if you have already used another type of drain cleaner.
Most stores in Birmingham AL carry a number of different drain cleaning products, but it’s a mistake to try one and then, if it doesn’t work, try another.
Liquid Plumber contains sodium hydroxide and bleach. And many other drain cleaners contain hydrochloric acid. The combination of bleach and hydrochloric acid causes a reaction where chlorine gas is formed. This is very dangerous for humans and animals (it was used as a chemical weapon in World War I).
3. Don’t use Liquid Plumber if your toilet is sealed with a wax ring.
If your toilet is sealed to the drain pipe with a wax ring, then Liquid Plumber is not a good option. Liquid Plumber will eat away at the wax ring which will cause water to leak out from the base of your toilet every time that you flush.
As toilet clogs are generally not caused by hair or grease build-up, a drain cleaner such as Liquid Plumber is not likely to be effective. But it will almost certainly cause damage to your toilet and will make solving the clog more difficult and hazardous.
In almost all instances when you have a blocked toilet, it is better to use a plunger to try and shift the blockage. And if this doesn’t work, call a plumber to unclog your toilet.
